About Yorkshire Coast Sight Support (YCSS)
Supporting People with Sight Loss Across Scarborough, Whitby & Filey
Every day, 250 people in the UK begin to lose their sight—that’s one person every six minutes (RNIB). If you’re facing sight loss, you’re not alone. Yorkshire Coast Sight Support (YCSS) is here to provide essential support, advice, and resources to help you maintain independence and quality of life.
Who We Are
Originally founded in 1935 as Scarborough Blind Society, YCSS has evolved to support blind and visually impaired individuals across the entire Scarborough Borough, including Whitby, Filey, and Scarborough. Whether you live in the area or are visiting, our doors are always open to assist you.
How We Are Funded
A common misconception is that YCSS is funded by RNIB, Guide Dogs, local councils, or the NHS—but this isn’t the case. We are an independently funded charity, meaning we rely entirely on donations, grants, and fundraising efforts to continue our work.
Our funding comes from various charitable sources, businesses, and individuals who help us run our vital projects. However, many grants do not cover essential running costs, such as our Resource Centre, utilities, and staff salaries.
How You Can Help
We need your support to continue providing life-changing services for people with sight loss. Whether you’re an individual, small business, or corporate sponsor, you can make a real difference by:
✅ Fundraising
✅ Sponsorship
✅ Donations
If you’d like to support YCSS, please reach out today! Every contribution—big or small—helps us empower people with sight loss to live independently.
